Mount Hagen

Mount Hagen is where the highlands do business. As Papua New Guinea’s third-largest city and the commercial engine of the Western Highlands, it’s a working town first — a market hub built on coffee, trade and the Highlands Highway that runs straight through it. That working-town energy is exactly what makes the Mount Hagen Show hit different: this isn’t a festival built for tourists, it’s a festival the highlands throw for themselves, and visitors get to be part of it.

First held in 1961, ahead of PNG’s independence, the show was created to draw the region’s clans together under one banner. Over three days at Queen’s Park, that same spirit plays out at scale — tribal groups from across the Western Highlands and beyond turn up in full ceremonial dress for the sing-sing, backed by drumming, ritual and feasting that hasn’t been softened for an audience. Local musicians and craftspeople round it out, giving the show a contemporary edge alongside the traditional one.
